NOTICE: IMPORTANT CHANGE TAKES PLACE OCTOBER 1, 2009. Changes in the way independent dealers handle metal tag transfers takes place October 1, 2009.
Starting October 1, 2009, independent dealers will no longer be able to take a customer’s metal plate and place it on a newly acquired vehicle for the customer and issue a form HSMV 83033 (Notification of Transfer of License Plate). Instead, dealers must issue a temporary tag to the newly acquired vehicle until the metal plate is transferred at the tag office. Once the tag is officially transferred, the customer will be able to remove the temporary tag and place the metal plate on the vehicle. This process will continue until July 1, 2010. By that time, DMV must have in place a process whereby dealers can electronically transfer a metal plate to the newly acquired vehicle using a computer and a third party provider, similar to temporary tag providers to accomplish this process. Dealers are encouraged to contact their current temporary tag provider to see if their system will handle the new tag transfer process. This new procedure was mandated by legislation that was passed earlier this year.
